NORTH OTAGO ROADS
Sir,—ln this morning’s issue of the Daily Times I notice that some misguided person was unfortunate enough to allow himself to be lured from the main highway to make a detour via the “Burma road ” through Kakanui. Let his experience be a warning to others who may be so tempted. But what of the poor unfortunate farmer who has to live on such a road? Our motor vehicles do not wear out—they just disintegrate. It takes a good deal of nerve-screwing to attempt the journey to the main highway, and I find myself casting envious eyes at the adjoining paddocks, wondering if I should attempt the journey crosscountry. Wonderful land on the “Burma road beautiful vegetable gardens; and I wonder when I have allowed my smiling Oriental friend to acquire my property, too, will he see to it that the roads are made suitable for his constant heavy traffic. I vote a representative to the county council—what for, I do not know. I see the grader go along occasionally, pushing the same old turf, now very much the 'worse for wear. I pay high rates and higher taxation, but in all my 37 years’ sojourn in this area I have never seen the roads in a worse condition.—l am, etc., Stephen Maffey.
