LORD BEVERIDGE'S ADDRESS
Sir,—As a . citizen of Dunedin, X attended the Town Hall to hear the much advertised exponent of the economic theories studied at the London School of Economics. The application of these theories, as Lord Beveridge has explained, requires a huge sum of money to finance it, which is obtained through the agency of his fellow-citizens acting as representatives of the people in Parliament and passing laws authorising the taxation department to demand money from wages, salaries, dividends and any other source available, a procedure Lord Beveridge thoroughly relishes, as he stated, . . we have socked the rich and made a pretty good job of it,” or words to that effect. This appears to be a violation of the spirit of the English Constitution and Magna Charta to use money as an instrument of control and domination. It is hard to understand why no mention was made of loyalty to the Kingship even by the customary singing of “ God Save the King” at the conclusion of the address.—l am, etc., Dunedin Citizen. [Lord Beveridge, when this letter was referred to him, said the writer had entirely misrepresented him—he had observed that the rich had been "soaked,” and pretty effectively, but people who had believed that was a remedy for their economic ills were still living very unhappily. The arrangements for the meeting were not In his hands, he added, but he would, have been delighted to have joined in singing the National Anthem.— Ed., O.D.T.]
