REPAINTING NEEDED
WHITE CENTRE LINE ENTRANCES TO DUNEDIN “ I am sick of hearing the City Council say that it is bankrupt; it needs a bit more push,” said Mr G. W. Ferens, president of the Automobile Association of Otago, at a meeting of the Association when discussing the painting of a white line down the centre of the Main South road into Dunedin. Mr P. W. Breen told the meeting that he had noticed that the white line down the centre of the road between Sawyers’ Bay and Herbert had recently been repainted by the Public Works Department machine, and he wished to know why the City Council could not paint a similar line on the road across Mount Cargill. “ With the approach of winter and foggy weather the road across Mount Cargill is becoming dangerous. There is only a faint yellow line in most places, and at some corners this fades out altogether. Why could not the City Council borrow the Public Works machine when it is down here? ” concluded Mr Breen. The chief traffic inspector, Mr E. H. Barrett, had told him that he had already tried to borrow the machine, said the secretary, Mr P. F. Harre. Unfortunately, the Public Works Department would not be able to lend it until June, as it would be occupied on other roads up till then. After further discussion the secretary was instructed to write a ‘“stiff” letter to the City Council asking if and when the white lines would be repainted.
