FIRST OTAGO SERVICE

CENTENARY OF PRESBYTERIAN WORSHIP The first Presbyterian service of public worship ever to be held in Otago was conducted on board the ship John Wickliffe as she lay in Koputai Bay, Port Chalmers, on Sunday, March 26, 1848. The centenary of this event is to be celebrated' in Port Chalmers on Sunday, March 21. The guest preachers for the day will be the Very Rev. W. Purves Boyes, of the Presbyterian Church of England, and in the evening the Rev. Professor G. A. F. Knight, of Dunedin. Visitors from various parts of the Dominion to the centennial celebrations have declared their intention of being present. There is also to be a centennial reunion social function on the Wednesday evening in the Garrison Hall, Port Chalmers, when the guest speaker will be the Right Rev. A. Campbell Grieve, Moderator of the Federal Presbyterian General Assembly of Australia. It is expected that some of the distinguished visitors to the centennial functions will also be present. Careful preparation has been made for this event and indications suggest that another crowded function will be added to the list of celebrations.
