WOMEN’S GOLF

WIN FOR CHRISTCHURCH PLAYER FINAL CLOSELY CONTESTED Miss K. Rutherford, of the Shirley Club, Christchurch, became the Dunedin women’s golf champion for 1948 when she defeated Mrs J. E. Salisbury, of Invercargill, in the final of 'the championship at St. Clair yesterday morning. It was a close struggle throughout and it was not until the nineteenth green that Miss Rutherford was able to decide the match v/ith a well-played bogey 4. Mrs Salisbury, who was playing her fourth final match in a Dunedin tournament, was consistently outdriven by Miss Rutherford, but was one up at the turn for home. A tendency to over-pitch her approaches and a converse weakness with her putts marred Mrs Salisbury's game and she failed to olay as well as she had done in the preliminary rounds. Yesterday's score of 86 was the poorest round she played in the tournament. A brilliant exhibition was given m the final of the senior consolation

event yesterday when Miss K. Shand (Otago), defeated Miss C. Mcßae (Nelson) 6 and 5. Miss Shand was in deadly form and registered par figures for the 13 holes played in her match. Three birdies on the outward journey gave her a commanding lead and the remarkable performance of registering birdies at the last three holes played put the issue beyond doubt.

The Sherriff Cup for the junior championship was won by Miss C. James, of St. Clair, who beat Mrs Morgan (Queen’s Park, Invercargill), 2 and 1 in the final. The junior consolation event was won by Mrs R. L. Galloway, of Timarq, who beat her St. Clair opponent, Mrs F. G. MacPherson, 3 and 2.

The best cards in the Single Bogey Match played yesterday morning were:— A Grade.—Mrs Joblin (St. Clair) 11, 3 down; Mrs Williams (Otago) 11, 3 down. Mrs Williams won on the count back.

B Grade.—Mrs Hunt (Otago) 17, 3 down; Mrs Tressider (Invercargill) 14, 4 down. Mrs Marett and Miss Dunlop, of the Otago Club, on a count back won the Medal Foursomes Match in the afternoon. Results:—Mrs Marett and Miss Dunlop (Otagp) 22, 74; Miss Buchanan and Miss Rutherford (Christchurch) 10, 74.
