PRINTERS’ FUNCTION

MR HARRIS HONOURED “DEAN OF THE INDUSTRY” No one deserved the title of “ dean of the industry ” more than Mr Harris, said Mr T. Somerville at a social gathering of the Master Printers’ Federation of New Zealand held on Thursday night, when paying a tribute to the work of Mr H. Harris. After 60 years with the Otago Daily Times and Witness Company, Mr Harris retired a short time ago, and earlier this week, he was made a life member of the federation. Mr Somerville, who said that Mr Harris had risen from compositor to jobbing manager of his company, referred to the confidence Mr Harris had gained, not only of the printers, but also of the unions. His work was known throughout the Dominion. Mr Somerville made Mr Harris presentations on behalf of the federation and the Otago Council. The Mayor, Mr Cameron, said that few men in the city were held in such high esteem as Mr Harris. Other speakers were Messrs C. Robertson and S. D. Smith, both of Dunedin, and A. Dennison, of Auckland. Mr Harris said that the industry was in for a hard time because the nations were, two years after the end of the war, as far from agreement as ever. The trade was bound to have difficulties both with imports and with staff.
