WHEAT DELIVERIES
QUALITY SATISFACTORY
QUIET WEEK FOR SEEDS
Deliveries of wheat continue to come to hand, and merchants report that the quality generally is satisfactory. The bushel yield per acre this year is considered to be quite up to normal. The favourable weather experienced recently lias enabled harvesting operations to be completed in record time. Very few lines of oats are on offer and it would appear that in many cases growers have produced only sufficient for thenown requirements. Fowl wheat still has a good local demand. Numerous inquiries have been received from the North Island for A and B grade Gartons for prompt' shipment, but local merchants are not in a position to respond. Chaff of good quality is saleable and it is not likely that the supply will be in excess of the demand. The digging of main crop potatoes has not yet begun, but crops are now ripening off and will be ready for lifting in a few weeks. At this time of the year the retail demand for potatoes is not large, as most domestic consumers are using thenown, grown in home gardens. A quiet week has been experienced in the turnover of seeds, and this has'been reflected to some extent in values, which have tended to ease slightly. This has been particularly noticeable in respect to ryegrass and white clover the two lines that have been receiving most attention from exporters this season. The position in respect to the export of seeds remains most unsatisfactory, and it will be some time next month before, the tvade will be able to ascertain from London the actual quantities for which import licences into Great Britain will be available. There is an entire lack of inquiry for Montgomery red clover, and fair stocks were carried over from last season. This seed is mostly poor in colour and is not of exportable standard. The market for cocksfoot continues to be steady, although inquiries are confined Ito hish testing lines. There is no variation to record in the market for Chewings fescue anti crested dogstail. Browntop is easier as export licences for this seed are now not available.
