MAJOR WORLD AIR RECORDS N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent. LONDON, Mar. 9. The new list of official air records just issued by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale shows that the four major world records are now held by the United States. These are for distance in a straight line, for distance on a closed circuit, and for altitude and absolute speed. The record distance in a straight line held by Commander T. D. Davies and crew, flying a Lockheed monoplane with two Wright engines, established in September, 1946, is 11.235 miles The speed record of 650 miles an hour was established by Major M. E. Karl in August, 1947. All helicopter records which form a new class, are also held by the United States. Great Britain holds 15 records in all the most important being the 100 kilometre closed circuit record. This still appears in the official list in the ljamcof Group-captain J. Cunningham, flying a Vampire in August, 1947. The figure has since been improved upon both by Squadron Leader Waterton ir a Meteor and by Lieutenant Commander W. J. Lithgow in an Attacker
