ARTIFICIAL LIMBS

ASSISTANCE TOWARDS COST SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFIT Special to Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH, Mar. 10. A substantial portion of the cost of artificial limbs supplied to civilian amputees would be borne by the Social Security Fund after April 1, *said the Minister of Health, Miss Howard, yesterday. The limbs would be obtainable through the hospital board in the district in which the applicant resided. The benefit would be available in respect of limbs manufactured by the Disabled Servicemen’s Re-establish-ment League and the splint departments of public hospitals, said Miss Howard. It was proposed that the Social Security Fund should bear 80 per cent, of the initial cost of the limbs supplied, together with six limb socks, but it would not bear any part of the cost of maintaining or keeping such limbs in repair. The Minister emphasised that the benefit would be available only in respect of limbs obtained through hospital boards and would not be retrospective.
