HAWKER FINED

OPERATING WITHOUT LICENCE Franklin John Smith, an entertainer, of Auckland, who has been visiting Dunedin for the centennial celebrations, spent a little of his spare time in January hawking three pieces of tweed material in South Dunedin, He did not have a hawker’s licence and, on the Information of Chief Detective Hall, was fined £3. with 10s costs, by Mr J. D. Willis, S.M.. in the City Police Court yesterday. The chief detective said that such unlicensed hawkers operating in the suburbs were a nuisance to the community. The only way in which the practice could be stopped was by enforcing the by-law against it.
