STATE OF EMERGENCY
PROCLAIMED IN QUEENSLAND
GOVERNMENT’S MOVE TO END STRIKE N.Z.P.A.—Copyright
BRISBANE, Feb. 28.
The Queensland Government has proclaimed a state of emergency, aimed at ending the railway strike, which has lasted 26 days. The declaration of emergency under the Transport Act is the most drastic step ever taken by any Queensland Government to end a strike. It gives the Government unlimited powers to keep community life going. An Order-in-Council has been issued prohibiting anyone counselling or inducing anyone to leave employment, also completely banning any picketing. Anyone failing to comply will be liable to arrest without warrant and to be charged, the penalty being a fine up to £IOO.
The declaration of emergency followed a decision by the strikers to defy the Arbitration Court order to return to work on Monday. Twenty thousand railwaymen have been idle following a decision made by 3000 workshop maintenance men to strike until given marginal rate increases and week-end penalty rates. The majority of the railwaymen are against the strike, which is reported to have been manipulated by Communist union leaders.
