CONFIDENCE RETAINED
TASMANIAN PEOPLE AND GOVERNMENT MR COSGROVE’S FIRM ATTITUDE HOBART, Feb. 27. The Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Mr Wright, said that Mr Cosgrove’s handling of party funds was a “ most glaring case of graft.” Mr Wright was speaking during the debate on the censure motion in the House of Assembly last night. The Government defeated the motion by 13 votes to 12.
Mr Wright said Mr Cosgrove’s return to office as Premier showed that “the corruption was not only rank but unrepentant.” Mr Wright continued: “ Mr Cosgrove has admitted he received money for his party’ special fund and drew cheques without having to account to anyone for either. I say he should not lay the blame on his party, but should take responsibility for it himself and go before the people. His whole party, by condoning what has been done, has forfeited the confidence which alone justified its continuance in office.’” Earlier Mr Cosgrove said he would not resign because he did not believe his Government had lost the confidence of the people.
