COST TO TAXPAYER

COMMONWEALTH-MAINTAINED BOARDS Rec. 11.15 p.m. CANBERRA, Feb. 27. The Commonwealth maintains more than 137 boards at a cost to the Australian taxpayer of more than £1,500,000 a year, according to the Prime Minister, Mr J- B. Chifley, in a written answer to a question in Parliament. Pride of place goes to the Commonwealth Prices Branch, which costs £844,000. Excluded from the list of boards is the Australian Broadcasting Commission, the expenditure ot which during the financial year is expected to exceed its statutory portion of listeners’ licence fees by £312,000, and the Overseas Telephone Commission, which has to be paid £30,000 for costs incurred in conducting coastal radio services.
