CHECK ON PILLAGING

ARMED GUARDS USED IN AUSTRALIA Rec. 8 p.m. SYDNEY, Feb. 27. Armed guards are now being used by the Railway Department to prevent pillaging from railway trucks, the Minister of Transport, Mr M. O’Sullivan, revealed to-day. This step was necessary because the increase in pillaging loss rose front £IB,OOO in 193839 to £220,000 in 1946-47. Thefts of cigarettes, tobacco, beer and spirits, easily sold on the black market, were rife.
