EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
FROM THE FILES OF THE ©tago ©ail? tumes DUNEDIN, FEBRUARY 28, 1863 • “ The Titania, which- arrived from Invercargill last evening, brought 34590 z of gold, consigned to the Bank of New South Wales.” “ The Molyneux,” says the Dunstan Times, “seems at last inclined to subside somewhat, and the beaches are again commencing to appear. The miners, it is to be trusted, will not again be disappointed by another flood. Activity and bustle are the more noticeable when contrasted with the dullness which has reigned over the place for three or four months. The supply of gold has also increased during the past week, and a more genuine business is doing at the stores than we have seen for some time past.”
: “ The goldfields correspondent of the Daily Times mentions that the first weekly escort from the Wakatipu was expected to close with from 10,000 oz to ll,ooooz of gold.”
“Another new steamer, the Lady of the Lake, is intended soon to run between Dunedin and Port Chalmers. This vessel, which was recently imported from Scotland by the proprietors of the Betsy Douglas, is a highpressure paddle steamer of moderate dimensions, and apparently capable of considerable speed. She made an experimental trip to port last week, and steamed at a rate which gave promise of her being one of the fastest boats in the harbour. Haying good beam, she would have admirably suited, in more than mere name, the trade on Lake Wakatipu, but by another season it is possible that there may be sufficient traffic for all the steamers now in the port, though their numbers and efficiency have lately been considerably increased.”
“In his opening address to the Provincial Council, Dr Menzies, the Superintendent of Southland, recommends the raising of the upset price of land to 40s per acre, and the doing away with the improvement restrictions."
