BALCLUTHA
BOWLING TOURNAMENT Forty-six rinks, including many from Dunedin, took part in the South Otago Centre’s open tournament on Stirling, Kaitangata, and Balclutha greens on Saturday. Unfortunately, the weather, particularly in the morning, was most unpleasant, but during the afternoon there was an improvement, and post-sectional play was held in pleasant conditions at Balclutha. The tournament was won by a Roslyn rink, skipped by W. J. McKay, second prize went to A. Vidal (Milton), and third prize to L. Cockerill (Balclutha). The trophies were presented by the president of the South Otago Centre. Mr A. Botting. FIRE BRIGADE COMPETITIONS Only three volunteer lire brigades— Balclutha, Kaitangata, and Milton—were represented at the annual competitions for the Watt Cup at Balclutha on Saturday, when the holders, Balclutha Brigade, were successful in retaining the trophy. The final points were: Baiclutha 62, Milton 49, Kaitangata 37. The winners were congratulated at a social held at night, when the trophy was presented. Results:— i. Muir), 36sec, 2; Milton A (G. Paul, F. Parker), 36 4-ssec, 3. Thirteen entries. FEDERATED FARMERS The monthly meeting of the Clutha branch of Federated Farmers was held on Saturday night, Mr J. A. Johnston (chairman) presiding. One new member was elected. In reply to a request from the branch that representations be made to the Main Highways Board to have improvements effected co dangerous portions of the Bal-clutha-Wangaioa highway, Mr N. J. Fryer, town clerk Balclutha, wrote stating that the council had made such representations from time to time, without success, because of the major improvement scheme which had been approved. It was stated that a meeting would be held at Baiclutha next month to consider the formation of a cattle pool in South Otago CRICKET RESULT Owing to the representative matches, South Otago v. Maniototo, there were no competition fixtures on Saturday, but in a friendly match at Balclutha the home team defeated Owaka, after an exciting finish, by 12 runs. Clutha made 189 (A. Dunn 45, R. Blair 42 not out, Bissett 33) and Owaka 177 (Tomkinson 62, McPhee 25, Wilson 20 not out). Bowling for Owaka, McNab took four for 52, while Clutha’s most successful bowlers were S. Dunn (three for 32) and A. McGregor (three for 12). INCREASED KILLINGS The manager of the South Otago Freezing Company, Ltd., Mr E. E. Barnett, stated yesterday that killings for the current season to date were 95,046, an increase of 15,774 on the figure for the corresponding period of last year. Both in quality and average weight, lambs were as good as last year’s, the manager added.
