TEMPORARY BUILDINGS

REAR OF MUSEUM CR IRELAND’S VIEWS When Cr Sidey asked the chairman of the Works Committee of the City Council, Cr Ireland, last night whether aproval was to be given to an application for the erection of a temporary building at the rear of the Museum for a botany building, Cr Ireland said that the permit would be refused. Cr Ireland said that there were some temporary buildings at the rear of the Museum, and they constituted a hazard in the event of a fire. He suggested that it would be better if one large temporary building were to be erected in the place of all the present temporary buildings. Highgate Widening Cr Ireland expressed appreciation of the action of Dr D. G. McMillan in offering to dedicate land in front of his property in Highgate to the council free of monetary compensation in connection with the Highgate widening. The chairman added that the council should thank all the people who gave their land, Dr McMillan’s offer being made a considerable time ago. The report was adopted. General An offer by the St. Clair Surf Club to paint the portion of the surf pavilion at St. Clair occupied by the club was accepted. The council accepted a quotation of £SO to paint the remainder of the building. The Dunedin Highland Pipe Band was granted permission to use the Caledonian Ground on Sunday, October 24, to hold a massed pipe bands’ display. Permission was also granted to make a charge for admission. Tenders The tender of the Kiwi Coal and Transport Company, Ltd., for the purchase of 50 cords of firewood at £2 a cord was accepted, as was that of £512 each for three eight horse-power Ford cars by Napier Motors, Ltd. The Mayor, Mr Cameron, and CrrWright, E. J. Anderson, Barr, Hayward, Taverner, Jolly, N. D. Anderson, Barnes, Ireland, Sidey, Armitage, and Smith were present at the meeting.
