affected by the way in which they handled the problems of the present. “ There is a new conception of public opinion developing towards the industries of this country,” Mr Hunter said, “and manufacturers will do well to remind themselves constantly that the only effective way of holding the support of the consumers is by the production of goods that reflect high standards of value and quality.” Directing attention to the sensational growth of the industries of the Dominion, Mr Hunter said that in 1924, goods worth £76,000,000 were produced, the employee strength being 40,000, and by 1946 this had risen to £ 195,000,000, with an employee strength of 128,000. This would be safeguarded and maintained only to the extent that every manufacturer gave due regard to the production of quality goods at competitive prices. “ The growth and development of industry within the Otago province has established an industrial monument, of which the manufacturers of Otago and Southland have great reason to be proud,” Mr Hunter said. At the present time plans were being laid for the further expansion and development of industry in this part of the Dominion which would constitute the province one of the great industrial centres of New Zealand.
