CYCLONIC STORMS
WESTERN AUSTRALIA FLOODED TRAIN PASSENGERS MAROONED Rcc. 11 p.m. PERTH, Feb. 23 Cyclonic rain sweeping in from the Indian Ocean has flooded vast areas of Western Australia and the transcontinental railway line has been washed away in several places and two trains arc stranded. Drenched by 12 inches of week-end rain, Kalgoorlic to-day is partly flooded and its tram service is at a. standstill. Boulder (near Kalgoorlie) is in similar plight after 13 inches of rain. Washaways yesterday marooned the Perth-Kalgoorlie express 40 miles from Kalgoorlie, and its 164 hungry passengers- have been warned by radio to censerve their food as it might be three days before supplies can reach them. Another stranded train is the west-bound express from Adelaide which is held up at Zanthus. A food train from Rawlinna (103 miles from Zanthus) has been sent to the aid of these marooned' passengers. The head of the cyclone by-passed Kalgoorlie to-day and is heading for Rawlinna, but is weakening in intensity. Kalgoorlie reported this afternoon that the rain had ceased. Gales reaching more than 50 miles an hour have been lashing Darwin all the week-end. Trees have been uprooted. fences blown down and ships have been moved to sheltered anchorages.
