NEGLECT OF CHILDREN
PARENTS SENT TO PRISON
STRONG REMARKS BY JUDGE
P.A. WANGANUI, Feb. 23. Arthur Henry Major, aged 33, and his wife. Clarice Marguerite Major,
aged 24, were to-day sent to prison by the Chief Justice, Sir Humphrey O’Leary, for failing to provide the necessities of life for their three children. The husband was sentenced to 12 months’ hard labour on each of three charges (the sentences to be concurernt), and the wife to three months’ imprisonment without hard labour on each of three charges (also concurrent). The Chief Justice emphasised that the sentences for both husband and wife would. have been equal if the wife were not due for
confinement four months hence. In sentencing’ the Majors, Sir Humphrey O’Leary said they had been guilty of gross and continuing negligence, and the case was much too serious for leniency.
