DISTINGUISHED CAREER
FORMER GOVERNOR-GENERAL OF AUSTRALIA SIR ISAAC ISAACS DEAD Rec. 8 p.m. MELBOURNE. Feb. 11. The death is reported of Sir Isaac Isaacs, the first Australian-born Gov-ernor-General of the Commonwealth. Sir Isaac (Alfred) Isaacs was born in Melbourne in 1855, graduating from the University of Melbourne with the degree of master of laws. He served with the Victorian Education Department in 1870-1874, and was called to the Bar in 1880. He was made a Queen’s Counsel in 1899. In 1892 he was appointed a member of the Legislative Council of the Victorian Parliament, holding the appointments of Solicitor-general and later,
Attorney-general of the State. He was a member of the Federal Convention from 1897 to 1898, and was the last surviving member of that body. In 1901 he was elected to the House of Representatives, and in 1904 was appointed Attorney-general of Australia, an office which he held until 1906, when he necame a Justice of the High Court of Australia. In 1930 he was appointed Chief Justice of Australia, and in 1930 achieved the distinction of being sworn in as the first Australianborn Governor-General of Australia. He retired in 1936. During his career Sir Isaac was invested with the Orders of Knight Grand Cross of the Bath and Knight Grand Cross of St. Michael and St. George.
