The longest supersonic ramjet engine ever flown was recently tested in the United States. Aeronautical engineers said ramjet missiles were much simpler and cheaper to produce than rocket missiles. The ramjet is a simple engine, which propels the missiles through the air much the same way as a squid propels itself by gulping water and expelling it at the other end. The photograph shows the engine leaving the launching rack at a naval ordnance station in California.
