NUFFIELD FELLOWSHIPS EXTENSION OF SCHEME The success of the Dominion Medical Travelling Fellowships provided under the Nuffield Foundation has been so striking that the trustees have decided to continue and expand its fellowship programme, and such policy will include the resumption of the Dominion fellowship scheme for a further term of seven years. Advice to this effect has been received by the Advisory Committee which acts as the Foundation’s representatives in New Zealand. The committee comprises Professor I. A. Gordon, Vice-Chancel-lor of the University of New Zealand, Sir Charles Hercus, dean of the medical faculty, Sir Theodore Rigg and Professor F. G. Soper. The Nuffield Foundation was established in 1943 by "Lord Nuffield and has been described as “the culmination of his discriminating philanthropy extending over more than 20 years.” Though its objects are wider, the Foundation has a common aim with many of Lord Nuffield’s other benefactions —the advancement of the health and well-being of mankind. The travelling medical fellowship scheme was originally planned for two years, and in 1946 three such scholarships were awarded to New Zealand, each tenable for two years. The success of the initial scheme has prompted its extension. This fellowship will be available annually to medical students of ability who are aged between 25 and 30 years, and are prepared to advance knowledge • and education in some branch of medicine as teachers or research workers. , Gratification that the original fellowship holders had won such high praise and shown themselves worthy sons of their medical school was expressed by Sir Charles Hercus to the Daily Times yesterday. He stated that the conditions of the fellowships would be advertised fully immediately and that application forms would be available at the Medical School within one week.
