ANNIVERSARY DAY

Observance on Correct Date

After a lengthy discussion at the meeting of the Oamaru Chamber of Commerce on Monday night it was decided to recommend to retailers that shops should be closed on Tuesday, March 23, the day on which the anniversary of Otago falls this year. It was staled that major celebrations, including the re-enact-ing ’of the arrival of the ship Philip Laing, would be held at Dunedin on that day. Other suggestions were that Anniversary Day be celebrated on Monday, March 22, or that it be included in the Easter holidays, but the recommendation that it be held on March 23 was carried unanimously.
