NORTH OTAGO CENTRE
Mr N. H. Colquhoun (president) was in the chair at a meeting of the North Otago Bowling Centre on Monday night. There were also present Messrs E. Congalton, A. M. Murray, E D. Watts, W. J. Currie, R, Hinton, F. Grant, J. A. Dunbar, J T. Adams, T. Crisp, G. Bowman, H. C. Jeffery, C. H. Andrew, and C. O. Brown, The following dates were approved: February 28, Waller Cup Match against Dunedin Centre, at Dunedin; April 3, Barnett Tiki Mitch against Christchurch Centre, at Oamaru.
Messrs Jeffery, Dunbar, Colquhoun, and Congalton were appointed the centre’s representatives at the Palmerston Club’s fiftieth jubilee tournament on Saturday. The Maheno Club was granted permission to hold a “ Flour ” day at Phoenix on March 13. The dates for the Champion of . Champion matches were approved as follows: March 6, Singles, at Hampden; March 13, Pairs, at Meadowbank; March 20, Fours, at Phoenix.
The secretary reported that the number of bowlers in North Otago had increased from 500 last year to 532. A report from the centre's delegate on the New Zealand Bowling Council, Mr R. Wilson, indicated that the present constitution of the council would be retained until 1950. The council forwarded a message of appreciation of the services given by the retiring secretary, Mr Henry Hay, in the administration of the game in North Otago.
The secretary reported that so far the entries for the Easter tournament comprised 13 Fours and 26 Singles. The Fours will close at 64, or on March 11. The officials for the tournament were appointed The North Otago 'team was congratulated on retaining the Murray Bowl against South Canterbury last Saturday, South Canterbury now having won it 10 times, and North .Otago 9 times. Mills Shield Competition
In a letter to its delegate, Mr Dunbar, the Hampden Club expressed dissatisfaction with the Mills Shield competition, and stated that the original draw was to January 10, and it was expected that a further draw would be made. It was- not a question pf winnnig the trophy, but the country clubs had played each other only once instead of twice, and the members looked forward to these matches. Phoenix and Awamoa had each played 12 matches whereas Hampden had played only seven and a-half matches, so that on the matches played it was impossible for any country club to win the trophy. The letter had been referred to the Match Committee, which recommended that Meadowbank play the country clubs at Meadowbank on the morning of March 6. and the country clubs play each other at Phoenix in the afternoon of the same date—The recommendation was approved.
