CITY POLICE COURT

YOUNG MAN’S LAPSE ADMITTED TO PROBATION An apprentice cabinetmaker, dged 18, employed at the Hillside Workshops, the suppression of whose name was ordered by the magistrate, pleaded guilty in the City Police Court yesterday morning to stealing a man’s watch, valued at £25, and an American naval jacket, valued at £5, the property of a fellow-employee. Mr C. J. L. White appeared for the defendant, who elected to be dealt with summarily. Mr H. W. Bundle was on the Bench. The chief detective, Mr T. Y. Hall, said that on January 29 last the defendant went to his locker at Hillside to get some cigarettes. He noticed the naval jacket in an open locker, and transferred it to his own. Later he discovered the watch in a pocket of the jacket. He placed another strap on it and on February 5 he pawned the watch for 30s, giving his own name and address. He was arrested on February 9. The property had been recovered. Remarking that the offence was a despicable one, the magistrate admitted the defendant to probation for 12 months, and ordered. 1 him to pay £1 10s to Robinson’s Finance Company, Ltd. The defendant was also ordered to accept such employment as was directed by the pro-: bation officer, Mr E. F. Mosley. Shoplifting Charge

A married woman, the mother of two children, appeared before the magistrate in the afternoon charged with stealing two women’s blouses, the property of A. and T. Inglis, Ltd. The chief detective said that the defendant had been arrested at 11.30 yesterday morning. He .asked for a remand to February 16. and 'this was granted by the magistrate. The defendant was allowed bail in her own recognisance of £lO, with one surety of £lO.
