SOUTHLAND NOTES

SIGNAL OFFICER WORKS WELL SPARE PART’S PROGRESS Special to the Daily Times INVERCARGILL, Feb. 10. Overnight rain left the Invercargill tracks on the slow side for this morning’s work. A few useful mile trials were recorded, but the majority of horses who raced at Winton last Saturday were restricted to pace work. The best mile of the morning was credited to Signal Officer, who had half a length to spare from Sea Flower, the journey being run in lmin 49 4-ssec. Signal Officer has freshened up since his North Island campaign, and is in first-class order. His next appearance will be in the Dunedin Centennial Cup, in which C. T. Wilson will be offered the mount. Waicoe was doing better than Waiau King over six furlongs in lmin 26sec. Waicoe is a greatly-improved novice. Spare Part was restricted to an easy mile, but he was always anxious to do better. He has made a good recovery from the stripped leg which prevented him from being raced on the third day of the Wellington meeting. Eriskay jumped away from the mile, and after being picked up by Copper Rose at the half, she completed the journey in lmin 52sec. Defendant and Profiteer ran a mile in lmin 53 l-ssec. They were eased over the concluding stages, with Defendant doing her work particularly well. She is to be raced over a mile and a-quarter at Gore on Saturday, and she gives the impression that she will be seen to aavantage over this ground. Wantwood and Winlowe finished (together at the end of a mile ill lmin 51sec. Wantwood hit out in great style, and he may be produced on the second day of the Gore meeting in the handicap, run over a mile and a-half. Bonny Royal was given a couple of rounds of pace work. She is engaged twice at Gore on Saturday, and her mission will probably be the hack mile and a-quarter, in which L. W. Hare has been offered the mount. . , The jumpers, Debater, Kosciusko, and Dark Warrior, have been taken up by T. E. Pankhurst. Three yearlings being educated by Pankhurst are the Robin Goodfellow—Sally Lunn filly bought by Mr H. O. Batcheloi at the national sales for 525gns; a SalmagundiFleet Lady filly, bought by Mr H G Wallis, of Gore, at the Chelandry Stud dispersal for 410gns; and a Sir SimperWild Cvgnet gelding for which Mr W. R. Cruickshank paid llOgns at the Chelandry dispersal. The Robin Goodfellow filly is an outstanding type. , „ Two yearlings in F. W. Ellis s team are a Lo Zingaro—lnfra Red filly ana a colt by Makarewa from Sweet Sign. The Lo Zingaro filly which cost lOOOgns at the Chelandry dispersal will race under Mr J. L.- Hazlett’s colours. The Makarewa colt, who cost 200gns at the same sale, will be raced by Mr E. Fowle, of Clifden, who has been successful with Sbadamai ihis season.
