By the Sporting Editor February 14 ~ .. Wanganui J.C. February 14 .. .. Rotorua R.C. February 14, 21 .. Gore R.C. February 14, 16 .. Greymouth J.C. February 26. 28 .. Dunedin J.C. Jottings The first race at Gore is timed to start at 11.15 a.m. The field for the High-weight Handicap at Gore is not a strong one, and Robert should at least fill a place. Got Away Badly Royal Lark got away badly in her race at Winton, and was forced to cover extra ground. In the circumstances the Royal Chief mare did well to finish close to the placed horses. First for the Season Lady Melrose had her first success of the season when she won at Winton on Saturday. The Sir Galloway mare is trained at Wingatui by J. W. Parkhurst, who has not had much luck since he lost the services of that good horse Diarma. Three on End
Naughty Lady has now won three races on end. She has been elevated to open company, but will be able to run out her hack engagements at Wingatui. Staying Blood Sir Garnish can boast a wealth of staying blood from Totolomai, his dam, who wort nine races, including the Dunedin Birthday Handicap. Totolomai was a Some Boy II mare from Morse Signal, the dam of Signal Officer, Doubleack and Trebleack'', and a member of the same family as that which produced The Smuggler, Spendthrift, Signaller and Inscrutable. Favourit; at Winton
Fine Night was made favourite for the Winton Handicap, but the best he could do was to finish seventh. He was well placed to the straight, but then began to drift. / Finished Weil
In the Winton Cup Foxchase was hopelessly placed at the entrance to the straight, but finished particularly well to get up for fifth. By Siegfried The inelegantly-named Jimmy the One is a three-year-old by Siegfried from the Salmagundi mare Salford, an unraced daughter of Patricia Holm. He won at Winton in a manner suggesting further successes. Great Chase
In the Hawksbury Handicap at Waikouaiti on New Year’s Day, Great Chase put up a good performance to finish second to Shere Khan after being last out of the Sorrier. His finishing run was impressive. As a result of that performance he was made one of the favourites for the Hakataramea Handicap at the Kurow meeting, but after having every chance he finished outside a place. The Wild Chase gelding sticks on well, and he looks one of the possibilities for the Eastern Hack Handicap at Gore. Wingatui Gallops At Wingatui yesterday morning on the outside of the course proper, which provided fast going, Gold Song and Gold Lance were galloped half a mile in 51 l-ssee. Both went well. Other gallops over the same ground were:—Great Chase and Ara Chief in 52 4-ssec, Bonne Nuit, Subtraction and .Salmon King in 53 4-ssec, and Count Deering, Attractive Air and Tympani in 52sec.
