COMMUNIST GAINS

CONTROL OF MANCHURIA

NATIONAL FORCES SUFFER REVERSES N.Z.P.A.—Reuter—Copyright NANKING, Feb. 8.

With the loss of Liaoyang now reported, the Manchurian territory under Nationalist control has been reduced to less than 1 per cent. In June, 1946, the Nationalists occupied as much as 43 per cent., the most ever held by the Government forces. In October last the Premier, Chang Chun, claimed that the Government held 10 per cent.

Informed sources claim that the main reason for the Nationalists’ reverses are the incompetency* of the field commanders and the presence of international elements in Manchuria. At Kuamudse. a Red operational base 150 miles north-east of Harbin, the Communists are reported to have 100 aircraft—half Japanese and half Russian. The Communists are also reported to have 400 airmen and technical personnel.
