LORD ELGIN’S ENGAGEMENT CANCELLED Special to the Daily Times , CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 6. 'though Lord Elgin worked Well this morning, he was sore when he pulled up and G. Ridgway has decided not to etart him in the Mid-summer Handicap. Franchise, who was due for her first race in the Trial Stakes to-morrow, has shown signs of soreness and F. Christmas vill reserve her till the tracks become soft. The two-year-old, Resolute, has been eased up lately, as a splint has developed. He may be started m the Lyttelton Plate but though he is a smart galloper, he is backward, having done very little work for a week. Grande MJelee was scratched at 9.40 a.m. to-day for the Hornby High-weight Handicap. Excellency, Royal Robe and To-Hoo are three southern horses that have arrived «o race at Riccarton to-morrow. Aditional riding engagements have been made as follows for Riccarton: —L. W. Hare, Detain, Lovemorn, To-Hoo; N. Davison, Mestiza; D. Dawson, Nightchild; B. R. Thomson, Bobby Dazzler; J. Taylor, Kinlass; P. Jones, Early Night. Julius Caesar arrived at Riccarton this week from the North Island. Small tracks do not suit him and it is thought he may do better on some of the bigger circuits in the South Island. He i has joined C. C. McCarthy’s stable.
