GREAT TREK’S EFFORTLESS WIN

Special to the Daily Times WELLINGTON, Jan. 18. Great Trek, the winner of the Auckland Railway Handicap on Boxing Day, added the rich Wellington Stakes to his record when he outclassed a small field which included Tauloch. the champion two-year-old of the season. After trading the leaders to the junction with the course proper, Great Trek strode effortlessly to the front and won by a good margin. Tauloch and Tranquil Gold were caught up in the tapes at the start and earned them for half a furlong before getting free. Magical began smartly and he set the pace down the lane from Arvastep and Retrieve, with Great Trek trailing them on the rails. Arvastep ran wide at the junction and carried Tauloch with him In the meantime Great Trek moved through to pass Magical and open up a gap on the field. He coasted home the easiest of winners by four lengths from Magical, who just as comfortably beat Retrieve Tauloch finished on a length back fourth, with two lengths to Tranquil Gold and she was followed in by Jacquinot Bay, Arvastep and Magic Stride. Great Trek was right at home in the going, as was Magical. Martinovich, the rider of Tauloch, said his mount never went right. The going was patchy, being soft in places, and Tauloch never settled down to gallop properly. Telegraph Handicap Blue Trout and Niloch made most of the pace in the Telegraph Handicap, but both ran themselves out, and Ladyship, who trailed them to the distance, came through to take charge at the last furlong. She looked likely to win easily till Majesty made a late run at her, and though he bored in he forced her to a half-head decision. Majesty appeared to be unlucky and probably would have won had he been better drawn. Morocco, Cressida, and Sea Fury, fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively, ran good races. Irish Note, The Pagan, and Wantwood were never prominent after reaching the course proper. High-weight Handicap Incident won the Te Marua High-weight narrowly from Master Gary, who was not as well ridden as the winner. Incident had the run of the race and appre-
