TEMUKA CONTEST
GARRISON BAND REPORTS A cheque for £2 5s 9d, being share of the profits of the recent band contest at Temuka, was received from the Temuka Municipal Band at the monthly meeting of the Oamaru Garrison Band on Thursday night. The secretary, Mr W. R. F. Naylor, reported that the total expenses incurred by the Oamaru Band were £23 2s, but the band had done well, winning the hymn test and being only one point behind in the test selection. The following are the reports of the musical judge, Mr R. J. Estall. on the band’s performances:— Hymn “ Bradford.”—Excellent tone in the opening, but just a little on the square side. Second verse, excellent playing and g(?od musical sentiment. Third verse, good firm ensemble, soprano sweet in tone. On the whole this has been excellently played, but the main fault is the lack of rhythmical cadence. March, “ The Flying Squaa.”—A poor start, but the band settles down. The tone and tune are commendable and the rhythm fair. The third measure good, and the trio good, with excellent euphonium and trumpeting. The drum too heavy. At times articulation very loose at beginning of bars. Last measure commendable. In the repeat a much better opening .this time. On the whole, a commendable performance. Band shows good tone at time's and fair reading. Selection, “La Regina di Golconda.”— Good opening, with good rythmical pulse. Cornet cadenza excellently played. Moderato, trombone playing with fair tone, but not much temperament, accompaniment very good Cornet and soprano very good and soloist improves. Allegro, very well played, a little more articulation wanted. Allegro moderate, an excellent opening, cornet only fair in style, though plays very safe. Piu mosso, good balance of tone and correct idea. Horn cadenza well played but a little more quality in tone would help. Andantino, cornet still plays well, trombone fair style and tone, closing cadenza fairly well played. Moderate, euphonium reeit excellent and band responds good. Cadenza excellently played. Moderate, euphonium still good tone and cornet extraordinarily good Allegro Vivo, excellent playing, though basses are not tuned on third valve. On the whole this had been an excellent: performance. Reflects good training and musicianship.
