EXCITING RACES

CORNWELL CUP CONTEST CHRISTCHURCH AND TAURANGA LEVEL P.A. WELLIINGTON, Jan. 18. For the thousands of spectators lining the course the two Cornwell Cup races held on Saturday in a gusty, southerly wind, provided the best spectacles and the most exciting contests of all the races held so far at Paremata. Four crews—Whangarei, Lyttelton, Manakau and New Plymouthcapsized in clouds of spray as their boats went out of control in the vicious squalls of the southerly. Manakau’s and' New Plymouth’s boats went right over and were forced to withdraw, but Whangarei and Lyttelton crews dragged their boats upright and carried on with the races,, though their craft were half filled with water. The Christchurch and Tauretnga crews are now level with two wins each. Three wins will gain the trophy. \ Sailing their best race of ’the series, the Plimmerton crew,, H. Dodson and P. Jobson, outclassed the fleet to win in the morning. Christchurch (G. Mander and M. Barribpll), after a hard tussle with Auckland and Lyttelton, scored their second win of the series in the afternoon. The Tauranga crew was unplaced in both races on Saturday as they had a poor boat in the morning and were kept in the fleet in the afternoon. Both leading crews have drawn good boats for the races to-morrow. Results:—
