' Excellency was never going like a winner in the Derby and was seventh to cross the line. Red Pickle never got clear of the ruck in the Stewards’ and finished seventh. Signal Officer would have finished closer up than fourth in the New Zealand Cup if he had been more patiently handled. Lorna Leigh was never in the call in the Stewards’ and finished ninth. The wins of Trident and Wantwood at Riccarton on Saturday were largely due to the fine horsemanship of L. J. Ellis, who, in two of the closest finishes of the day, got the best out of his mounts without the semblance of a roll in the Lord Dundonald was one of the leaders for most of the journey in the Cup, but he found the distance beyond him and he ran himself out before the straight was reached. Attractive Filly
Balkis started from the extreme outside in the Spring Nursery, but she got out well and was never further back than fourth. A neatly turned chestnut filly by Sir Beau from Ninia, she looks like developing into a really smart performer.
Beaulivre Filly Invest was ridden by C. McDonald in the Apprentices’ Handicap and consequently had to carry a 101 b penalty. She is a three-year-old filly by Beaulivre, from Golden Blonde, and is trained for Mr E. N. Fitzgerald by L. J. Ellis. Popular Success
Fine Night paid almost a score to win the Apprentices' Handicap but it was a popular win as the Wingatui trainer, F. Shaw, has not had much luck lately. He trained Palantua, the dam of Fine Night, to win the New Zealand Cup in 1933, Brilliant Finish
Spare Part put up ( a remarkably good performance to finish second in the Apprentices’ Handicap as he was riot in the first 14 as the field ran down to the fivefurlong post. He looked a certainty beaten.
Class Demonstrated Since 1894, four-year-olds have won the New Zealand Cup 20 times, but only two of them. Grand Rapids and The Banker, carried more than 8.0, until Beau Le Havre put up his brilliant performance on Saturday with 9.3.
Derby Winner Liebestraum was never further back than third in the running of the Derby and just held off Distinction, who finished strongly. Liebestraum is a brown gelding by Beau Vite from Seranata. Disappointed Thimble had ever chance in the Derby and showed the way right round to the straight, where he began to drift and he was fifth to cross the line.
Surprise Winner His recent form did not point to Wantwood as a possibility for the Stewards’ but he ran one of his best races to get the narrowest of decisions. It was not surprising that he paid just over a third of a century on the win machine.
