SOUGHT BY POLICE
NAZI LEADER IN AUSTRALIA MISSING WHILE WAITING DEPORTATION SYDNEY, Nov. 22. Dr Gerhard Neumann, who is awaiting deportation with 450 other German nationals in Australia, was detained last night at Victoria Barracks; Sydney, under a guard. Some of these Germans will leave Sydney today on'the Kanimbla for Melbourne, where other fdrmer internees will be taken on board. r ' Meanwhile the Commonwealth Investigation Police are searching Sydney for Dr Johannes Heinrich Becker, the former head of the Nazi Party in Australia. Becker disappeared from Tanunda. in South Australia, ot Tuesday, while awaiting deportation. He broke his parole, and is now believed to be in Sydney. . A Trans-Australia Air Lines official in Adelaide said that Becker had booked to fly to New Zealand from Adelaide via Sydney on November 20 Becker called at the air lines office on Tuesday and cancelled his booking to Sydney. He booked instead to fly to Melbourne on a Skymaster, which left Adelaide for Melbourne yesterday morning. Becker was not on this plane. Commonwealth police said Becker arrived in Sydney by plane on Thursday morning. He travelled under an assumed name. The police are confident that Becker has made a visit to Sydney to see his friends before leaving the country, and they are confident that he will give himself up. Becker, who is 49, has been in Australia for 19 years. His wife is British, and they have two children.
