Brilliant Sprinter Blue Trout has been sprinting in brilliant style, and if she is beaten in the Stewards’ Handicap it will not be through lack of condition. Pageantry’s Rider Pageantry will be ridden by R. J. Mackie on the second and third days of the Cup meeting.- The Salmagundi gelding should be suited by the Otaio Plate. Apprentices’ Candidate Legendre, a candidate - for the Apprentices’ Handicap at Riccarton to-day, is a three-year-old bay gelding by Arausio from Hoy. Owned and trained by G W New, he won at the Feilding meeting. From Knockfin , Finigin, who is expected to race prominently in handicap events for two-year-olds at Ricfcarton, was got by Robin Goodfellow from Knockfin, a winner of the Stewards’ Handicap. Dunedin Guineas Winner L. J. Ellis, who won the Derby .on Royal Tan last year, has won the race on four occasions. His mount to-day will be Kartikeya, the winner of the Dunedin Guineas. A firm track does not suit the Finis colt, who has defective feet, and will be raced with concussion pads under his plates. No Double Winners Since the New Zealand Cup was first run in 1883 no horse has succeeded in winning the race twice, and no fewer than 14 winners never won another race after their success. Mount for L. J. Ellis Royal Tan has entered the list of favourites for the Cup during the last day or two. He will have the services of L. J. Ellis, who has had outstanding success in distance races. Brilliaut Beginner Wild Note is a brilliant beginner, and he has drawn a good marble in the Stewards’, The field is, however, the strongest he has yet met. Red Pickle’s Owner Mr A H. Fisher, who won the Stewards’ twice with Comic Song, went north yesterday to see Red Pickle carry his colours in to-day’s race. Fast Track The chances of Lord Dundonald, Boolamskee, Royal Victor, and Miss Medley in the Cup would be improved by an easing of the going, but it promises to be very fast. Open Race The Derby is considered to be one of the most open races on the Cup card, and Thimble, Distinction, Sweet Nymph, Banshee, and Kartikeya will all come in for solid support.

Palm Bearer When Palm Bearer won the Great Autumn at Easter she carried 7.10, and in the Cup she has 7.9. Although she had only three races up to a mile this season, she has come through a solid preparation and will be landed at the post a fit horse by her astute trainer, F. D. Jones, who won the Cup in 1937 with Ceme Abbas, who raced in the interests of Mr C. N. Draper, vice-president of the Dunedin Jockey Club. Trainer Retiring The Matamata trainer, G. Cobb, has announced his decision to retire from training at the end of the current racing season in July owing to health reasons. Cobb came prominently into racing when he developed the good performer Duvach about seven years ago. Subsequently he set up as a public trainer with marked success, and he headed the list of winning trainers in New Zealand in the 1945-46 season with 34 Wins. In the 1946-47 season he was third on the list with 25 wins. He is also doing well again this season. From Duvach Cobb bred this year’s Melbourne Cup winner, Hiraji by Nizami. After racing Hiraji successfully as a two-year-old, Cobb sold him to Mr F. W. Hughes, of Sydney, for 2800 guineas. His three-year-old, Ninnid, by Balloch, is a half-brother to Hiraji. Ninnid won £1405 in stakes last season, but has been unsuccessful so far this season. Cobb has a yearling filly by Robin Goodfellow from DuVach. It is probable that he will sell all his horses when he retires, although he may retain Duvach, for whom he has had a substantial offer since Hiraji distinguished himself by winning the Melbourne Cup
