CRICKET NOTES

The second day’s play in the second round of the senior competition was played last Saturday and resulted in Union, Waitaki and Oamaru B securing outright wins. The Waitaki v. Oamaru B match was keenly contested and at the conclusion of Oamaru’s innings more than halfway through the afternoon, the game could have gone in favour of either team. In the two innings Oamaru made a total of 307 and Waitaki a total of 318. In the second innings Waitaki played for an outright win and nearly lost the game through this. Oamaru dismissed five of Waitaki’s batsmen very cheaply, but the tail-enders saved the day. In Oamaru s second innings J. Hall made 80 runs J. Bee (29) and M. Gunn (23) added useful scores to the total. Burrows, one of Waitaki’s opening batsmen, scored 42, and Simpson (24), Sumpter (46) and Sigley (15) were the other batsmen who reached double figures. , . , Union gained an easy five-point win over Albion. In the first day’s play Union made a total of 227 runs, and Albion reached 91 runs before being dismissed. In the second day’s play Albion commenced and completed its secpnd innings, batting two men short. Albion reached 107 before being dismissed, thus giving Union a win by an innings and 11 runs. Firth (29) and Sutherland (23) were Albion's leading batsmen. Forbes and Hutcheon were the most successful bowlers for Oamaru, taking four wickets for 31 runs and three for 31 respectively. At the commencement of the second day’s play Kurow was in a good position against Oamaru B, having a lead of five runs on the first innings. In the second innings, however. Kurow fared badly, being dismissed for 23 runs. Burrows took six wickets for 8 runs, and Hall two for 6. Kurow batted two men short. Oamaru had no difficulty in securing the 28 runs needed for an outright win, and declared after three wickets had fallen for 37 runs. Kelk made 24 not out, and Francis took two wickets for 22 runs and Neale one for 4. Teams for To-morrow
