DIGGERS’ TOURNAMENT

A high wind, stunting aeroplanes, sundry obstructions on the fairways, flares, rifle shots and bugle calls were among the disturbing factors when the annual Diggers’ Tournament was held at Balmacewen yesterday. It was a social rather than a competitive occasion, and there were numerous stops for refreshments, including the inevitable rum issue. Men of two wars and three services mingled in a concerted attack on Colonel Bogey, and while a majority of the 125 entrants found the conditions too disconcerting for serious play, there were some who triumphed over the difficulties, artificial and' otherwise, to return good scores.

The president of the Dunedin Returned Services' Association, Mr M S. Myers, expressed the thanks of entrants to Mr Alex Watt and his committee, who organised the tournament, and to the Otago Golf Club for the use of the course. The prizes were presented by the president of the Otago Golf Club, Mr J. W. Smeaton.
