Brilliant Century Scored by B. Sutcliffe
B. Sutcliffe jumped straight into his stride on the opening day o 4 the Otago Cricket Association’s 1947-48 first grade competition on .Saturday when he delighted spectators at the University Oval with one of his most classical displays in scoring 142 for North-East Valley against University.
Some other good scores were also registered, notably those of B. Walsh (North-east Valley) 73 not out, N. McGregor (Grange) 60, and G. H. Mills (Old Boys) 52 not out. In some instances it was obvious that the players were still “ limbering-up ” and that early practices had not been taken seriously by one or two of the teams.
On the whole, however, it was a very successful beginning, and the number of new faces showed that the young talent in the province is getting an opportunity to prove itself early in the season. The weather favoured the opening and the grounds looked well, although the outfields were slow. No lower grade matches were played as the rain during the week had not allowed the wickets to firm. A summary of the progress made in the four matches is as follows:—
Kaikorai 108 v. Carisbrook 97 for five wickets. Grange 195 v. Albion-Y.M.C.A 53 for six wickets. Dunedin 113 v. Old Boys 102 for four wickets. North-east Valley 312 for nine wickets (declared) v. University.
