HELP REQUIRED
TYPHOID AT KAIKOURA APPEAL TO DUNEDIN AIDS Endeavours by the Dunedin Red Cross and Health Department to find two women V.A.’s to go to assist in nursing the large number of typhoid cases at Kaikoura had not met with any success up to last night. An official of the Dunedin Red Cross stated that widespread inquiries had failed to reveal a single V.A. in Otago who was able to go. The ones approached were already occupied with a case, were suffering from ill-health, or were married. Further attempts to obtain assistance for the Kaikoura authorities would be made. Four women V.A.’s from Wellington are already giving assistance to the nursing staff at the Kaikoura Hospital, where there are over double the normal number ©f patients as a result l of the recent outbreak of typhoid. Approximately 50 persons are reported to be suffering from the disease at Kaikoura. As Canterbury was unable to provide sufficient girls to assist the nursing staff at Kaikoura, the assistance of the Health Department was enlisted. Six V.A.’s were wanted. Four were obtained from Wellington, and it was hoped to get two from Dunedin. In addition, five of the Health Department’s district nurses have gone to help, three from Christchurch and two from Wellington.
