INDIANS OFF FORM

DULL DISPLAY OF CRICKET WICKETS FALL CHEAPLY Rec. 10 p.m. MELBOURNE, Nov. 2. After two interesting, and at times exciting, days of cricket, to-day was almost an anti-climax, greatly disappointing the crowd of 25,000. It was expected that India would chase runs and try to defeat Victoria on Monday. Perhaps Victoria set the pace, batting until just after lunch to reach 273. Fothergill, usually a dasher, made 54 in 108 minutes, including one 4, against steady but not dangerous bowling. India just plodded along after losing two fairly quick wickets. Mankad and Hazare, following ducks in the first innings, were the top-scorers. Both were uncomfortable against Johnston, the left-hander, and lan Johnson, the off-spinner. Johnson, in particular, frequently beat both, and was treated with great respect. Mankad at last lashed out from Johnson for an easy catch to N. Harvey, who lost it with the sun in his eyes. A few minutes later, Mankad was out lbw. After passing 40, Hazare began to show better form and was much more confident. Amarnath, joining Hazare half an hour before stumps, was out in the last over, swinging a wide ball from Hassett to fine leg. Scores:—
