LUCKY PUNTER
MEMBERSHIP OF CLUB WITHDRAWN
Rec. 6.30 p.m. MELBOURNE, Nov. 1. A punter who admitted to-night that he had collected about £60,000 in winning bets from Melbourne bookmakers since August has had his honorary membership with a Melbourne sporting duff - withdrawn. His betting had been carried on under the name “ New Zealand.”
Honorary membership is usually granted to visiting members of inter-State sporting clubs during major race meetings. This privilege is not necessarily granted to members of race clubs. “ New Zealand ” said he had offered to arrange for cabled confirmation of his membership, with the Auckland Racing Club, but was not given the opportunity to do so. Officials of the Melbourne Club declined to comment.
" New Zealand ” said, ” I bet for cash or against a cash deposit with the bookmakers before the day’s racing begins, so that my losses are always covered."
