FAMOUS DIVISION
HIGHLANDERS AT ALAMEIN LORD MONTGOMERY’S PRAISE N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent. Rec. 11 p.m LONDON, Oct. 31. Speaking at Glasgow, Lord Montgomery recalled the achievements of the 51st Highland Division at Alamein. “That division had arrived in Africa just before I did,” he said. “ It was reborn from the highland division which had had such a bad. time at St Valery. The-new division was determined that in its first battle it would get its own back for St. Valery It was nervous—not nervous that it would not fight bravely in battle, but nervous that it might not do well and might not do credit to Scotland. “Knowing that, 1 put it between two very experienced fighting divisions—the Ninth Australians and the Second New Zealanders t will never forget that Highland division going into battle in moonlight with their bagpipes playing. I had no fear that they were not going to be a credit to Scotland. They fought magnificently,” he said.
