CLEAR THINKING
Sir —Mr R. C. Burgess, in speaking to the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce, is reported to have emphasised the need to think before acting. Our economic and political systems could not last for a day longer if clear, analytical thinking were brought to bear on them. We are living under conditions where sectional, interests and prejudices are kept inflamed and active and clear thinking discouraged. The effect of these conditions is to conceal the fact that at the very base of our economic system there *l, iniustice. Take one instance alone. Many n Britain are existing on the bread line, and many more in Europe are yet the American Government this year was paving a large sum of money to buy up potatoes which were allowed to rot in the fields and over tons of which dye was poured to render them unfit for human consumption. Mr Burgess himself slips from his ideal when he reminds his young J^ e H dl L™ “we lived by what we exported.
