WANGALOA MINE
GOOD QUALITY COAL PRODUCED COMPLAINT OF HIGH PRICE Parliamentary Reporter WELLINGTON, Oct. 31. A statement that he was pleased to record that after his last inspection he had changed the unfavourable opinion he previously had of the opencast Wangaloa mine was made by Mr J. A. Roy (Oppn., Clutha) during consideration of the Mines- Department estimates in the House of Representatives to-day. He said he was pleased to note that the mine was working a good seam and producing quite good quality coal. It was commendable that there had been no regular hold-ups or absenteeism. The Hospital Board in his electorate had been prepared to take a large quantity of coal from there but the price was too high. The Minister of Mines, Mr McLagan replied that open-cast mines were very unattractive-looking when first opened up. The Hospital Board referred to wanted the coal at a severely cut price when the Mines Department knew it could sell it at a fair price during the winter, which was done. i
