AID FOR BRITAIN
Sir, —If everyone observed the weekly fast day, or day of abstinence, which is the Friday of each week, and which is kept in memory of the Crucifixion, much meat would be saved. I am told 100 tons of meat could be saved In Dunedin alone every seven weeks. It would also mean an even distribution of self-denial, and the butchers would not have to close for even one week. Fasts were directed to prepare us for such tirhes as these, so that the body might be disciplined and prepared for the time when fast days are essential for the good of ourselves or for others. The members of the Church of England, at least, owe it as an act of obedience, which a little study of their Prayer Book will convince them.—l am, etc., K. D. Andrews-Baxter.
