NOTES FROM RICCARTON

LORD ADVOCATE IN FORM Special to the Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH. Oct. 30. The wet spell is not at an end yet, showers continuing to-day, but there are signs of improvement. There was not much excitement in the work at Riccarton this morning, but a few horses were given strong work on the No. 7 grass track. The Riccarton horses are home from Trentham. and most of them are having a short rest before being got ready for the New Zealand Cup meeting. F. A. Roberts nominated Primitive and Citril for the Levin meeting, and it is possible they will go north next week. hojrd Advocate was favourite for the Le Bons Handicap at Motukarara, but at no stage d:d he flatter his supporters. It was his first appearance after a spell, and he may do better soon, as he looks in great order. Faultrosa showed plenty of speed from the barrier in her early races, but seemed to laclc stamina. She has changed her tactics, as at Motukarara and Rangiora she was finishing on solidly from the back, just too late on each occasion to do more than earn place money. She should win races later in the season.

Responsive has come on well In the last few weeks, and her win in the Halswell Handicap at Motukarara was a good effort. She should go on to more success over longer journeys than nine furlongs. Among the beaten lot in the Okains Trial Stakes at Motukarara was Great Victory, a three-year-old gelding by Salmagundi from Victory Bond, a Paper money mare, dam of Fair Weather, winner of the McLean Stakes and the Dunedin Champagne Stakes. Great Victory was having his first race, and he registered a very good performance under difficult conditions. He started from the extreme outside, and had to cover a lot of extra ground all the way round the turn. In spite of this he was always prominent, but he had nothing in reserve at the finish. He came through the race well, but T. H Gillett decided not to race him at Rangiora on Monday. His third placing on Saturday made him eligible for nomination in hack races at the Catiterbury Jockey Club’s meeting.
