NORTH ISLAND SERVICE
RAILWAYS APPEAL DISMISSED P.A. WELLINGTON. Oct. 18. The right of Gordon Kitchener Prisk to retain the licence granted him to run a luxury bus service between Wellington and Auckland, has been upheld by the Transport Appeal Authority, Judge K. G. Archer, who has dismissed an appeal against the licepce by the Railways Department. This was stated to-day by Mr C. A. L. Treadwell, counsel for Prisk, who added that he had been informed that the Appeal Authority has extended until May the time which the licensee is granted to begin the service.
The Railways Department’s appeal, which was on the grounds that the effect of competitions on the department’s rail service must be considered, and that the new service was not necessary or essential, was heard on October 3. Mr J. Walker appeared for the department on appeal. The service is to be run three times a week in each direction in daytime, and an articulated modern trailer vehicle is to be used. The transit time will be about 14& hours. Built-in cots or bassinets are to be provided for children, and the bus will have storage facilities of the thermos type for hot and cold refreshments for passengers. Except to. change drivers twice or three times en routes, no stops will be made between the terminals, and only through 1 passengers may be carried. The service is to connect with the inward and outward South Island steamer services at Wellington.
