THE HOUSING SHORTAGE
Sir—l understand from reliable authority that a co-operative society, intending to operate in the Corstorphine area, has obtained a permit to erect temporary premises in order to set up in business as general storekeepers. Lately both in Auckland and Wellington similar claims for the use of State houses for temporary business'prenrses have been turned down in view of the acute housing shortage. To my mind, the granting of a permit for materials to be used for temporary premises, which no doubt will have to be pulled down at a later date, is even more scandalous than using a State dwelling for a shop. The housing area at Corstorphine would appear to be reasonably wfell catered for —there are two general stores on the outskirts of the settlement, several weekly deliveries, and furthermore, I understand, a returned soldier is opening up a similar business within the area almost immediately. To waste much-needed materials and man-power on erecting temporary premises does not appear to me to be serving the best interests for relieving the present housing situation.—l am, etc., Houseless.
