RADIO BALL

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATED A decade of broadcasting was celebrated by Station 4ZB with a ball in the Town Hall last night. Before the dancing commenced, the gallery was packed with spectators and soon after the opening of the function the dance hall was filled to capacity. _ „„ Mr D Sheard, station director, and Mrs Sheard received the guests. Mrs Sheard wore a becoming gown featuring a si ver lame jacket with a bosque over a skirt of black georgette. Her shoulder spray was in dusty rose tonings. One of the features of the evening was the presence of several flower girls, who, in gay peasant dress, with appropriate head-dresses, offered floral sprays from their large paper-covered trays to the guests on their arrival. The premiere broadcast conducted by Ainni Grennell and Jack Bremner attracted a large audience. Taking up her stand in the foyer, Miss Grennell described the frocking as the guests entered at the main door. The hall was attractively hung with coloured streamers, large paper plaques, and huge balloons were hung from the ceiling. At midnight these were released to float down upon the dancers. The stage scene represented a broadcasting studio in which the orchestra was seated, and flanking this stood two tall pylons. As the guests entered the foyer they were invited to sign the visitors* book and then to sign opposite a number in the " lucky book.” Lucky spot dances were also held, and a novelty was presented in the " Wire Recorder,” when voice tests for radio were taken. The prizes, which were displayed on the stage, consisted of a black plastic handbag and a pair of white gloves, an overnight bag, two pairs of silk stockings, 160 cigarettes, a powder compact and a cigarette lighter, two large boxes of chocolates, a pair of slippers, and a set of lingerie.
